Local soil has a lot of clay, and tends to form hardpan. Raised beds are good, and the lumber keeps the beds from washing away. We are planting perennial strawberry plants, so it's worth the expense, especially to keep our home-made compost from being washed down the hill.

Last year we had a great tomato crop, probably the result of that great compost. This year I grew some Brandywines from seed, also habanero pepper plants, and just bought some other heirloom (not hybrid) tomato plants at a nursery yesterday.
