...Seriously, I'll bet Railroad Guys know this stuff cold. They've been building railways for hundreds of years (they were first subterranean affairs for mining; then they got "outed" by Steam) and I'll bet this large, cold, scintillant beer here that they have been taking notes, voluminous sequential archived notes, on What Works and Did You Hear About Taht Poor Slob Johann.

And some beancounter made them figure out "OK guys. We know ties and spikes work. I can't make you reduce the number of rails below 2. But let's see how far we can space the spikes and ties, OK?" The vibrant tango of Engineering and Bankruptcy.
