We still have real, genuine lumber yards up here... Not as many as there used to be... But some of the towns still have them... Usually something like... P. Green & Sons Millwork ....or something to that effect... Only when you go in... usually the "son" is about 72...and "dad" isn't either in his 90s, or he isn't around anymore...

I like getting my wood at those places though... even if it costs a bit more...because sometimes I'm picky about my wood... especially if I want some pine for a carving project... They'll let you pick around through the wood... in fact, they kind of expect you to do that... AND they'll save end cuts off large diameter lumber for carvers if you let them know what you want....

And they know all of the good carpenters... guys who do large size custom turning, or who turn burl wood into bowls... yep... Those are the better lumber yards....

Their yards are usually really cool too... older saws and lots of really old equipment still around. And the '"streetfront" of the buildings is often kind of weird...high... with an old-fashioned lettered sign on it... And the glass in the windows is often old... small paned... and all wavy and full of air bubbles...

Hmmm... glad we still have a few places like that around...

And gee... if you don't care if your lumber is dressed... like for building barns... Or if you have your own plane... Well... there are still a few farmers around who have small sawmills on their farms... Where you can take a tree to have it milled down into lumber... Or where you can buy lumber milled from odds-and-ends trees that the farmer buys from other people... Now THERE is where you can get some damned cool wood!!!

Hmmmm.... I could go on and on...but I think my audience might be shrivelling up right about now... (-:
