ericsson SAYS in meetings with investors that the royalty situation with Qualcomm for W-CDMA is not resolved and that it expects to get as much payment from Q as it makes to Q. Now, of course that is rhetoric, but then again, so are the quotations from Q. I suspect that Ericsson WILL eventually agree to a paying more to Q than it receives, but probably not at the rate it pays for CDMA-One.

I think my fundamental point about the royalty situation is that I dont think the statements by Qualcomm were rhetoric. Qualcomm was unusually explicit in the fact that they will get paid identical amounts for IS-95, CDMA2000 and W-CDMA.

One possible explanation for the discrepancy between the two companies is the following....I dont think the agreement between Qualcomm and Ericsson that was formed last year (March 26th) included infrastructure. See the following post....

Perhaps both are being somewhat honest....Ericsson will pay the same royalty rate for all modes of handsets, but the infrastructure royalty situation is still unresolved. Perhaps I am being naive, but I try to distinguish between areas where management is giving me an opinion (such as statements that W-CDMA is years away) and statements that are based on facts that must be known to them (the conditions on the royalties).

I have a call into IR for Qualcomm and will see if I can get clarification on any of the above....
