My experience has been that my larger trades stay intact (don't split) on high volume stocks. The execution time may be slightly longer, but still often under 5 seconds. You may want other comments as well.
As you could guess, limit orders and lower volume will slow things down much more. For what it's worth, I'd say less than 5% of my trades are split.
