Ericsson has a very formidable CDMA related patent portfolio due to their long history of military communications research. They were studying CDMA before Qualcomm was even a twinkle in Irwin Jacob's grandiose eye. Qualcomm's dirty little secret is that they'll be paying Ericsson substantial royalties for the use of Ericsson's CDMA patents in being able to license their own. Even though Ericsson officials, being humble Scandinavians, have chosen not to make grand pronouncements that they own the wireless future, as have their colleagues across the pond, they are just as entitled to make such chest thumping declarations given the strength of their intellectual property.
