Chuck RE...<<<<<<<<- On the other extreme, let's say this move becomes highly disruptive and no consumer wants to buy anything below 1.0GHz. Will the OEMs be happy when they realize that all of a sudden they may be stuck with weeks worth of AMD/Intel systems inventory that they can't sell without serious discounts and AMD does not have the capacity to supply all the OEMs needs even if they want to switch all the demand from Intel?

One needs to consider all these and many other issues to determine if it make sense for anyone to talk about releasing a 1.5G part when the last part released was 1G.<<<

Chuck, why all the worries about a 1.5 ghz having all of those disruptions when they have never been that much of a problem in the past? The K-6 sells well even though there are four chips which perform better. Also, Intel will have the mhz problem, not AMD as the slowest chip AMD will have is 700 mhz Duron. There are compelling reasons to bring out the fastest speed Tbird AMD HAS. First of all, the copper process is a new process. Bringing out a medium or slow speed T-Bird will deflate expectations of benefits of copper. Bringing it out at 1.5 ghz will bring out the wow factor; as wow, Ive gotta get one. It will also force many enterprise manufacturers to look at the new chip with a different attitude; as in if I don't sell this, my computer will be obsolete before it even hits the shelf. If AMD does as you say, there might never be something to force the enterprise segment to seriously look at AMD; why go to AMD when its the same as Intel? After Willy shows up it may to to late. Now is the time to open some eyes, and create a demand for the copper chip. 1.5 ghz with promises of 2ghz to come will make Willy with rambus a non event.

Now, I am not saying, if AMD doesn't have the 1.5 ghz they should introduce it anyway, ala Intel, but if it exists it should be sold simply to get the T-bird off to a roaring start. The rest of your worries are inconsequential if that happens. Sometime you just gotta have a gimmick; 1.5 should do the trick.
