You do it no harm- I am not sure if you make it more likely it will find a home in others. For example- if a crippled idea is sitting out there, and you ignore it, your ignoring it may have no effect on it's ability to take root. It may be so damaged that your ignoring it, or failing to fight it, has no impact on it.

And conversely, what if your arguing against it actually makes people want to hold the idea? Not saying anything against you personally- but this happens. In other words the fact that you do not argue against it actually kills it. I just thought of that- I'm not sure how it fits in. Will have to think about it some more.
