And conversely, what if your arguing against it actually makes people want to hold the idea?

For instance, arguing against an idea can serve to call attention to it, attention that it might not otherwise receive and might not merit?

BTW, when I spoke of not arguing against an idea, I did not have in mind an idea that is crippled and unable to take root, but the point is well taken.
