jay, if prc ever became quasi democratic, at least to the extent that some of the former east bloc countries are (say, poland, ukraine) a lot of opposition in us to reunification would be neutralized. but the kmt has long had a hold on the us polity, including the ties of the soongs to the levers of power, which went so far as to have the south vietnamese government leave peace talks with north vietnam to hurt the humphrey campaign in 1968. interesting the way that the gop has had ties to kmt all these years but they scream when prc tries to buy clinton (of course, clinton is for sale to be bought). the risk we all run over here is underestimating the prc the way western powers and us underestimated japan pre 1941 and again in 1960's and 1970's.

otoh, prc respects us in ways it doesn't respect other western powers. i recall a few years ago prc threw an amazing tantrum when france wanted to have some kind of commercial ties to taiwan but only mildly protested when us sold roc advanced fighter aircraft.

while clinton would not on his own commit us troops to defend taiwan if pla ever crossed the straight, us public opinion would probably demand some military intervention on behalf of roc. clinton would follow public opinion and doubtless us would be involved in another land war in asia.
