Embedded devices: Wind River Systems (WIND) surpassed the consensus estimate by 3 cents with first-quarter earnings of 11 cents a share, excluding one-time charges.

Wind River Systems makes operating systems that let other companies program "embedded" devices.

"Anything that has intelligence that is not a PC is an embedded device," Richard Williams, an analyst with Jefferies and Company, told UpsideToday.

In other words, Wind River, which Williams says has an 80 percent market share of the embedded systems industry, offers a product that helps run a range of manufactured goods from coffee makers and alarm clocks to in-car navigation systems and Internet switches.

"Wind River is the Microsoft (MSFT) of the embedded world," said Williams
