WSTL's Wirespeed modems are faster than ALA modems, I was told by users. Most of the modems Pacbell-ASI installed were ALA modems about two months ago. Now WSTL and ALA modems are being installed by ASI. I am told that ASI and Pacbell are part of SBC - Pacbell takes care of the phone lines and ASI runs SBC's internet business. The free modem and free installation costs will be recovered from the $39.95/month DSL subscription over a long period. ASI is spending a lot of money (loss) to secure customers as AOL has been doing with free internet offer.

This is why Mark (WWSTL) emphasized relationships with ISP's during CC's. He pointed out that modems will soon become a commodity item, with a poor margin. Ram
