I believe the successful daytraders are the ones like you describe: closing the position at the end of the day. this is just like forex traders of banks: no overnight position or having a position within a certain limit.

unfortunately, many daytrading firms are catering to novices who are afraid to take a loss, and keep the position overnight hoping for recovery the next day. little that they realize, a quality stock like qcom can have 7 out of 8 downdays in heavy volumes. the stock will recover, but the damage has been done due to margin call.
