I agree with your point, but I was making my judgment based on the color. My thought was that because the verdigris color does not appear to be mixed with any other metal oxidation, it was more likely than not somewhat pure. I don't think I've ever seen brass or bronze turn that particular shade of blue-green, but you mentioned being a sailor, and I know you've sailed all around the world, so you've seen a lot more oxidized metal than I have. Since copper is somewhat soft, you're probably correct that it is an alloy.
