LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES: Lucent Technologies supplies Airtel with new nationwide
optical network
M2 Communications - Friday, June 02, 2000

JUN 2, 2000, M2 Communications - MADRID, SPAIN -- Airtel has selected Lucent
Technologies (NYSE: LU) to supply and build its high-capacity national optical network. This
high-speed, converged voice and data network will enable Airtel to give its customers a full
range of advanced offerings, including wireless and wireline services and Internet access.

Lucent already has begun work on the first phase of the network. The total value of the first
phase agreement could reach 20 million Euros.

Under the terms of the agreement, Lucent Technologies is deploying its WaveStar(tm) OLS
400G - an 80-channel dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) system - in Airtel's
network. By enabling a fibre that once handled a single stream of information to now handle
up to 80 individual streams, Lucent's DWDM system will enable Airtel's network to transmit
up to 400 gigabits of information each second. That's the equivalent of transmitting the data
contained on 75 CD ROMs each second.

The WaveStar OLS 400G will enable Airtel to meet the dramatic growth in fixed telephony,
Internet and wireless traffic that its network is experiencing. Currently, Airtel has nearly five
million wireless subscribers.

"The dramatic increase in our network traffic requires we deploy next-generation technology
to give our customer the highest quality global services," said Airtel. "Lucent is a leading
provider in this area. By providing us with the latest technology from Bell Labs and its vast
experience in next-generation networking, Lucent will help Airtel anticipate customer
demands and provide the leading-edge services our customers have come to expect.

"We're pleased to be working with Airtel on this network and appreciate the confidence they
have put in our vision of the future of communications networking," said Lucent Technologies.
