John - Re: "Willamette, Intel's next-generation desktop processor expected to emerge later this year, will debut at 170 square millimeters, "

For reference, the Pentium II was 203 sq. mm. on a 0.35 micron process when first introduced in 1997.
Yields on this were superb.

The 170 sq. mm. Willamette die size is 15% SMALLER than the original Pentium II - and Intel's yields have IMPROVED over the past 3 years as their fab processing has improved.

When the Willamette hits high volume production next year, the NEW $2 BILLION Fab in Arizona should be coming on stream - with the new one in Rio Rancho due about 6 or 8 months later - for greatly increased fab capacity.
