I think the press is often just dumb, lazy, and tries to put the most interesting spin they can think up without actually needing to understand what they are writing about. Of course, this approach may match most of the readers -- just not the more informed folks. The CNET article on Willamette was missing relevant context for many of the statements (as subsequently highlighted by others here).
