he was known as 'big red' to those who loved him (which included all the thousands of fans that watched him race). i remember reading somewhere that secretariat's heart was literally twice the size of the average. he made 'athlete of the year' (probably in '73) and was on the cover of either time or newsweek. he's buried in the infield, i think behind the tote board, and it may be at belmont (memory's a little sketchy here, sorry). i saw a picture once of the backhoe they brought out to dig his grave. when he won the belmont by 31 lengths, the second place horse was closer to the horse that ran last than he was to secretariat. if i remember correctly, ron turcotte always wore blue and white diamond checkered silks when he rode secretariat.
