[LatelineNews: 2000-4-9] XI'AN - China will build highway roads with a total length of 150,000 kilometers in the western part of China over the next 10 years, Hu Xijie, vice-minister of Communications, was quoted by Asia Pulse as saying on April 7.
In twenty years, all villages in western China will have an access to the national or regional highway networks, according to the overall plan for infrastructure construction in western China.

By 2010, China is to build eight national trunk lines, most of which are expressway roads. At present, construction is under way on 4,600 km of roads in western China. Work on another 4,000 km will start pretty soon, Hu said at a seminar on development of western China which closed today in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

Western China comprises 10 provinces and autonomous regions. The region has 56.8% of the country's territory and 23.1% of China's population. However, highway density of the region only accounts for one fifth of China's eastern part.
