The Big Boy places almost seventeen tons on each of its sixteen drive wheels. Giving each drive wheel a very conservative (on the small side) solid contact of 4 square inches, that drops contact pressure below ten thousand psi.

...I wonder if there are figures out there on area and pressure. I'm sure Rail Guys know, because the max rated pressure of the steel in the wheels and tracks is a property of the material that needs to be designed around.
