Trigonometry works in our favor. A circle has an infinitesimal contact with a straight line. But a teeny deflection from circularity yields a huge increase in contact area. It's the horizon effect - raise your head six feet above the round earth, and the amount of land you see expands to many miles in each direction.
So the steel crunches elastically for a few thousandths of an inch and makes contact with the rail along a good-sized patch, which is yielding a few thousandths of its own in a reversible, springy dimple.
