One of Basset-boy's links had a wonderful number in there. "Tractive ratio". The answer to our question is IN there; I can just TASTE it. A tractive ratio of four means it takes a 400 ton locomother to exert 100 tons of lateral pull. It needs to do this without wrinkling the rail under shear under the driven wheels, so I am inclined to think the contact areas are of appreciable size.

Let's agree that the contact area between wheels and rail exceeds the aggregate minimum diameter of those bone-shaped rods that transfer power from the pistons to the drive wheels, multiplied by the tractive ratio. Pushrods?
