BEIJING (CBS.MW) --.China's second-largest telecommunications
company has ended plans for a mobile phone network using a
U.S.-developed technology standard, according to the official state
newspaper.

The story offers evidence that China United Telecommunications Corp.,
or Unicom, is backing out of a licensing deal with U.S. company
Qualcomm (QCOM: news, msgs), to build a network based on the code
division multiple access standard.

The official China Daily newspaper quoted a senior
Unicom official on Sunday as saying that the
company had no intention of deploying the current
generation of CDMA technology, according to the
Financial Times. See full story. It had planned to
start rolling out a nationwide mobile network with a
designed capacity of 50 million lines this year, requiring an investment of
more than Rmb100bn ($12 bn).

The February deal attracted much attention, occurring after the United
States lobbied China to enlarge the use of the CDMA in a market
dominated by the European developed standard popular in most of the
world. Qualcomm's stock, which had a 52-week high of 200, has
suffered as a result of the speculation. Friday the shares closed at 72
11/16.

The China Daily cited an unnamed Unicom executive as saying that the
timing of building the CDMA system has become unfavorable.
