VDI MultiMedia Establishes HD Center For Telecine With Panasonic D-5 HD VTRs

VDI MultiMedia has recently purchased two Panasonic AJ-HD3700 D-5 HD multiformat mastering VTRs and two AJ-HD2700 1080i/720p switchable D-5 HD VTRs for its Burbank facility in a sale valued at $368,000.

DI MultiMedia, recently named by Forbes' magazine as one of the country's top 200 small companies, is involved in the duplication market, with offices in Los Angeles, Burbank, New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Dallas, as well as the Hollywood headquarters.

The investment in the D-5 HD equipment is supporting the company's establishment of an HD Center specializing in telecine and format conversion work for feature films. The facility has already taken delivery of the AJ-HD2700 machines, which were used to finish a trailer for a Dreamworks SKG project and are being utilized to master three MGM/UA titles.

"With a firm commitment to HD telecine work, we were convinced that the D-5 HD format, which records at a higher bit-rate with less compression than the competition, was the preferred choice," said Merle Sharp, vice president of engineering/chief technology officer. "Ultimately, the AJ-HD3700 VTRs will become our chief mastering units, enabling us to master at 24 fps and accommodate multiple format requirements. The AJ-HD2700 will be our workhorse VTR, assigned mainly to network delivery assignments and giving us the flexibility to deliver in either 1080i or 720p."

According to Sharp, both models facilitate handling data files. "We can convert the data to video, record to D-5, perform color correction, and then record to another D-5 machine. It's a key benefit for us."
