they have sites on the net exclusively devoted to pointing out the bias in the mainstream press. Of course they would undoubtedly be called "extreme".

A site devoted toward exposing bias in all directions would be very valuable. A site which focused only on bias in one particular direction would be highly suspect.

There is a saying about the mainstream media I think fits rather well. You can't guarantee they will be pro Democrats on every position, but you can guarantee they will be con Republicans.

"The mainstream media" is less homogeneous than you seem to think: the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times, to name two off the top of my head, are very much mainstream, but not particularly liberal in their bias.

Part of the problem is that the political center is impossible to define with any accuracy: a media outlet that strives to take a centrist position is likely to be perceived as liberal by conservatives and as conservative by liberals. You also have to add an element of regional prejudice: the New York Times is quite centrist by New York standards, but would doubtless be called liberal in Omaha; the reverse is probably true as well.

As I pointed out earlier to Karen, on the left it is taken as an article of faith that the mainstream media are pro-corporate and generally conservative in their bias.
