Addendum: "Are you trying to tell me that Qualcomm is going to allow its technology in the same handset as Nokia? How about Ericsson? How will they make money? And Motorola?"

They'll figure it out. Probably, there will be two types of handsets initially: roaming and local. Local could be CDMA or GSM, whatever works, with the usual revenue streams.

In roaming handsets, the drive would be to get your software into the handset. Getting to a standard would probably be a bloodbath; there would be winners, and losers.
