Schwab says launches wireless online trading SAN FRANCISCO, June 5 (Reuters) - Leading discount broker Charles Schwab & Co. (NYSE:SCH - news) on Monday said it has launched online trading services over wireless devices.
The service, PocketBroker, will allow the brokerage's customers to make trades and receive news initially through hand-held digital organisers made by Palm Inc. (NasdaqNM:PALM - news).
The move to wirelss adds another trading venue for the brokerage, whose clients can buy and sell stocks on their computers, through retail branches, by email and over the phone.
``The anytime, anywhere nature of the wireless medium is a great fit for the real-time nature of trading and market activity,'' said Bob Sofman, senior vice president at Schwab's Wireless Solutions Group.
``For example, customers have the ability to receive real-time market alerts and current news -- wherever they are -- and, if they chose, act on this information regardless of their ability to access a branch, phone or PC,'' he added.
Schwab will develop the service through an alliance with Aether Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:AETH - news), a wireless data products and services company.
The service includes access to real-time quotes, market summaries, news headlines, equity trading and confirmation, order status, account balances and positions, real-time alerts, full news stories and watch lists.
The service launches initially on the Palm IIIx and Vx devices.
Schwab announced PocketBroker service in Canada last fall and will start services in over the next two quarters in places such as Hong Kong, Japan and the United Kingdom.
The company said the delivery of financial services over wireless devices is particularly useful outside the U.S. where computers are less available.
Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. serves 7.1 million active accounts with $775 billion in customer assets.
Schwab currently has 3.7 million active online accounts with $418 billion in customer assets. |
