Sun Debutes Its N8200 Series

Sun Microsystems Inc. last week made its formal entry into the network-attached
storage (NAS) market when it introduced its NAS-optimized storage hardware, the
StorEdge N8200 series.

The N8200 series of NAS subsystems will be based on the company's A1000 RAID
arrays that were adapted for NAS connectivity, said Shiva Mandalam, product line
manager at Sun, Palo Alto, Calif.

The model N8200, which currently is available, offers capacity from 200 Gbytes to 800
Gbytes with 18-Gbyte hard drives and is targeted at service providers and workgroups,
said Mandalam. Capacity will rise to between 400 Gbytes and 1.6 Tbytes as 36-Gbyte
hard drives become available later this year, he said. Prices start at $54,000.

The model N8400 will offer capacity of up to 6 Tbytes and the model N8600 capacity of
up to 10 Tbytes. Both are targeted at data centers and are expected to be available in
September, Mandalam said. Prices have yet to be determined.

For backing up the stored data over the network, the N8200 series will be bundled with a
choice of Sun's Solstice backup client or the NetBackup client from Mountain
View-based Veritas Software Corp., Mandalam said. In addition, the N8600 will have a
PCI slot which will accept a Fibre Channel host bus adapter for use in backing up over a
storage area network, he said.

The units will be available via Sun's integrator partners and the company's direct sales
