"Timescales are also an important decision factor- will there be a significant window of opportunity for EDGE between 2000 (Third Generation (3G)) and 2002 (3G) to justify the investment in rolling out EDGE technology? The answer is not yet clear and probably will not be resolved until early 2000 when the EDGE specifications are finalized and questions relating to the backwards and forwards compatibility of existing and future infrastructure investments is clearer."

Jim- Some important(!) words above from your post. Again not being very knowledgeable about broadband mobile wireless, what do you make of the NTT DoCoMo's recent leaks about a purchase of a US based GSM carrier...well I have to go look it up...well I can't find it now. But anyway I am fairly certain DoCoMo(who I believe is the worlds largest mobile wireless SP), made a substantial investment in a GSM provider here in the USA.

I recall the provider was the one that purchased USA based GSM carrier--Aerial Communications. Oh yeah. VoiceStream. Here's a PR about the deal: yahoo.cnet.com

Well now to really add confusion, here I was going to point out to you what I thought may be DoCoMo EDGE migration plan here in the USA. Now I see the CNet article contradicts me by saying DoCoMO may be interested in VoiceStream because of DoCoMo's internal interest in rolling out W-CDMA?

Like I said, I'm confused. If you can add any color to this, it would be appreciated. -MikeM(From Florida)
