I believe the FAA is entirely serious in their threat; but I think Alaska will do whatever it takes to avoid grounding. The FAA has grounded airlines in the past for less serious problems; the now defunct Kiwi, for instance.

I am long three airlines, but not ALK. My guess is one could make money on the stock at these prices, but if looking for quicker returns, I believe AMR and DAL (which I am recently long) are better buys right now, with less risk. They are cheap because of the merger stories. One might hope for a buyout of ALK by a larger airline, although it seems the market doesn't expect that, based on the stock price.
