The great thing about shopping over the Internet is that you can buy 5 bags of cookies and no muesli without enduring condescending looks from the staff.

An odd thing seems to have happened to health food. A few years back a "health food" store opened in Manila, with much publicity. I went down right away, with visions of the health food stores I used to go to: organically grown vegetables, bulk nuts, whole grains, homemade cheeses, free-range chickens, ad infinitum, ad gloriam. Instead, I found shelf upon shelf of pills, and an enormous quantity of odd powdery substances, which apparently one mixed with water to form a marginally edible sludge.

No food, by my standards, in the whole store. Bizarre.
