I tried something called a poutine in Nova Scotia that was a gluey, gelatinous mass of shredded, boiled potato shaped like a cannonball, with amorphous anonymous grey meat inside, and I don't think those are ever going to catch on down here.

Actually, up this way.... a poutine is a container full of french fries with either white (chicken) instant gravy, or red (beef gravy, I guess), poured all over it...and then fresh cheddar cheese curds melted in a gooey mess all over the top... and NO, I've never had one, but I think they are the national food of Quebec... but they are increasingly found in Ontario and elsewhere... When I was in Maine a couple of years ago, I saw a big "poutine" sign in an area where a lot of French-Canadiennes vacation... I've heard that they're in Florida, and someone on S.I. told me that they can be found at a certain diner in Colorado... (say what??!!). |
