Hi all; Hope and delusion re VIA and RDRAM chipsets:

It is obvious to anyone who reads the trade press that VIA isn't going to get anywhere near RDRAM. A quick glance at their website should convince, they have several pages devoted to DDR hype. They were slated to be the main host for the June 5 DDR Computex summit. The evidence was overwhelming that VIA was going to support DDR.

But hope springs eternal in the human breast, and a silly rumor on Yahoo made pretty good news a couple weeks ago on this thread. For people frightened in the face of severe adversity, (i.e. the memory makers telling Intel to go eat scrap) even the least likely piece of evidence gives hope. The first post and replies included:

May 26, 2000 NEWS!!! VIA to release chipset using Rambus DRAM... #reply-13781984

Richard Surckla posted the Taiwanese Via reference (oweowedpd). The source is usually reliable. #reply-13782831

Maybe some smart people at VIA have convinced the Thunderheads at AMD that Rambus is a MUST! #reply-13782985

While it could be that oweowedpd's source is in error, it appears that the source is the Yahoo Taiwan News, NOT some individual's post on a chat board. Big difference if I am correct. #reply-13783172

Via will put out a RAMBUS Chip set platform #reply-13787516

May 27, 2000 VIA had assumed a KEY position as AMD's partner. AMD NEEDED VIA to build the chipsets for Athlon and thunderbird/duron, and to build the DDR-SDRAM chipsets as well. #reply-13788173

Now two weeks have gone by, and VIA has announced no less than SIX chipsets for DDR. Of course they have announced nothing for RDRAM. The hopes that VIA was about to dump AMD have died away.
