Sprint Enterprise Network Services Selects Persistence Software As Lynchpin Of New Three-Tier Architecture
SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2000--
Sprint Completes Infrastructure Architecture With PowerTier for Enterprise JavaBeans Transactional Application Server
Persistence Software (Nasdaq:PRSW) today announced that Sprint Enterprise Network Services (nee "Sprint Paranet") has implemented Persistence PowerTier(TM) for Enterprise JavaBeans(TM) (EJB) transactional application server to complete its three-tier infrastructure architecture for communicating critical and highly sensitive data to its customers. Sprint Enterprise Network Services, the IT consulting and integrated-network management division of Sprint (NYSE:FON), is using PowerTier as the middle-tier interface between its web-based clients and corporate databases -- adding essential flexibility and security to its customer-facing information infrastructure.
"Incorporating PowerTier as our enterprise solution was one of the best decisions we made in 1999," said Paul Cali, Director of IS, Sprint Enterprise Network Services. "We had a tight time frame for deployment, but the flexibility of PowerTier had us up and running in under two months. While PowerTier is already helping us track revenue, maximize the use of resources, and hire for upcoming projects, the infrastructure it has enabled will continue to support the IS development team in providing more efficient means of transmitting critical data to those who need it the most -- our customers."
Sprint was already well advanced in constructing its new infrastructure architecture when it replaced its previously selected application server software with PowerTier, following a thorough evaluation of several competing products. The new infrastructure underpins the internal business processes at Sprint Enterprise Network Services as well as its remote services including managed network, help desk, desktop, server and application, database, and security services -- all based on best in class software and hardware.
PowerTier is the only Java-based application server solution fully capable of implementing the latest Java Development Kit (JDK), version 1.2.2, and all applications written by the Sprint development team are based on an integral part of that JDK. Servlets were quickly written to integrate PowerTier with Sprint's backend servers (including its financial, resource management and legacy systems), and EJB-technology "session beans" were easily created to enable key applications. PowerTier also enabled Sprint to successfully implement Java's new security model, which helps protect the integrity of the confidential customer information that moves over the Sprint Enterprise Network Services IT infrastructure.
"Sprint Enterprise Network Services' integrated solutions -- ranging from the desktop to wide-area networks -- are best-of-breed. Once again, Persistence has been selected as the integral, enabling technology for a leading-edge company," said Chris Keene, CEO, Persistence Software. "PowerTier saved Sprint hours of development time and helped them meet a rigorous deployment deadline, while providing a substantial performance increase over competing systems."
