INTERDIGITAL SETS AGGRESSIVE STRATEGY FOR 3G DEVELOPMENTS

Singapore, 6 June, 2000. . . 3G wireless technology developer, InterDigital Communications (Nasdaq: IDCC) is pushing ahead with the concurrent development of FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) and TDD (Time Division Duplex) technologies to meet expected high demand for 3G software and technology from around the world.

Mark Gercenstein, CEO of InterDigital, said: "InterDigital is a leader in 3G technology development. Our expertise in wideband CDMA air interface design is second to none and we are one of the few companies developing both FDD and TDD technologies. Already we have made significant contributions to the 3G standard and as a consequence have IP (Intellectual Property) embedded in the recently adopted 3G standard. To enhance our marketing efforts in the Asian region, we have recently announced the opening of our first Asian office in Japan."

Mr Gercenstein added: "New licence holders and existing product/infrastructure manufacturers are looking for the products and technologies that will help them be successful in these emerging markets. InterDigital is offering its specialised know-how in air interface design and expertise in 3G technology to companies looking to develop products and services for this sector."

The company has dedicated two large teams of engineers to FDD and TDD developments for 3G products. One team is developing TDD technology for Nokia. The other team is developing an FDD 3G ASIC and, with a semi-conductor partner, plans to market a true 3G, full bandwidth, high speed (384 kbps and up) system on a chip design solution in 2001.

InterDigital has a long heritage as a developer of digital wireless technologies and currently holds approximately 800 patents and patent applications worldwide in both TDMA and CDMA technologies. The company has been developing TDMA technology for almost 30 years and was a leader in establishing TDMA as a standard in the USA. InterDigital has been developing wideband CDMA technology since the early 1990s and has developed some of the core technology used in CDMA products worldwide.

Mark Gercenstein commented "There is little doubt that wireless growth generally will continue but we believe that data growth will outstrip voice growth and make data-centric technologies increasingly important to the industry. The availability of unpaired frequency bands and their suitability for data transmission will make TDD technology a critical feature of 3G in the coming years. We are seeing growing interest in both FDD and TDD technologies."

TDD is highly suited to asymmetrical demands such as requesting information and downloading from the Internet, where in one direction there is a low bandwidth requirement and in the other far greater bandwidth is needed. Conversely, FDD is designed to handle both voice and data symmetrically and will deliver data rates up to 2Mbits for applications such as video conferencing.

The five specifications under the 3G standard include three forms of CDMA technology: Time Division Duplex (TDD) and Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) - forms of wideband CDMA, and FDD Multi-carrier CDMA (referred to as cdma2000). The standard also includes two forms of TDMA technology: Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephone (DECT), and UWC-136, an evolved form of the U.S. TIA/EIA-136 digital cellular standard.

InterDigital is creating innovative solutions for mainstream wireless applications which deliver cost and time-to-market advantages for its customers. By leveraging its technology and intellectual property into third generation standards and products, it is maximizing its long-term revenue and earnings opportunities. InterDigital has a strong portfolio of patented TDMA and CDMA inventions which it licenses worldwide. For more information, please visit InterDigital's web site: www.interdigital.com.
