This report is a little weird, because TNF-alpha is a cytokine, not a gene. From Taber's Medical Encyclopedia:

crixivan2.com
"A protein mediator or cytokine released primarily by
macrophages and T lymphocytes that helps regulate the
immune response and some hematopoietic functions.

There are two factors: alpha (TNF[alpha ]), also called
cachectin, produced by macrophages, and beta (TNF[beta ])
called lymphotoxin, which is produced by activated CD4+ T
cells. The functions of TNFs are very similar to those of
interleukin-1."

Probably written by a publicist. Still, it's interesting. TNF-alpha is the bad guy in several diseases, not just RA and Crohn's.
