On a brighter note, looks like Itanium is on schedule:
Industry Leaders Test Readiness Of Intel Itanium? Processor Hardware, Software At Newly Created 'Plugfests' Industry Gathers in Oregon as Itanium Processor Production Nears SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 6, 2000 - Intel Corporation has expanded its broad IA-64 industry enablement efforts with the first in a series of PlugFests, a "proving ground" where leading hardware and software developers gather to test and tune their products and technologies on a variety of prototype Intel© Itanium? processor-based systems.
The Itanium processor is the first in a family of IA-64 processors from Intel, and the most significant new development in Intel microprocessor architecture since the 386 processor introduction in 1985. The Itanium processor is scheduled for production in the third quarter of 2000, with server and workstation systems appearing in the second half of the year.
From June 6-8, more than 100 hardware and software developers will gather in Tigard, Ore., to test the interoperability of operating systems, software applications, disk drives and other components and peripherals on the latest Itanium processor-based prototype systems. A second interoperability PlugFest, slated for Sept. 11, will expand to include additional computing, telecommunications and networking companies.
"Intel's global industry enablement focus is designed to ensure that end-to-end IA-64-based solutions are available from a broad choice of server and workstation manufacturers as well as application developers worldwide," said Anand Chandrasekher, vice president of the Intel Architecture Group and director of the Intel Architecture Marketing Group. "As we focus on establishing IA-64 as the engine for e-Business, we want to provide the industry with every opportunity to optimize technologies and solutions that harness the power and unique features of the Itanium processor."
The PlugFests are the latest in a series of programs that Intel has initiated over the past year as part of a massive IA-64 industry enabling program. Others program elements include the early and broad distribution of key technical information and development tools, along with ongoing shipments of more than 4,000 prototype server and workstation systems. Intel also has opened more than 30 Application Solution Centers around the world, where Intel engineers and hardware and software designers work together in co-located laboratories to design and tune IA-64 applications.
Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
