Arab League calls for end to UN sanctions against Sudan

CAIRO, June 6 (AFP) - The Arab League Tuesday gave its backing
to Khartoum's efforts to persuade the United Nations to lift the
diplomatic sanctions imposed against it for failing to extradite
three men suspected of attempting to assassinate Egyptian President
Hosni Mubarak in 1995.

Khartoum has "fulfilled all its commitments stipulated in the
resolutions of the UN Security Council" in connection with the
issue, said Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdel Meguid in a
statement, stressing "the League's support and solidarity" in
response to Sudan's call for the sanctions to be lifted.

Abdel Meguid praised "the steps undertaken by the Arab countries
in New York, firmly backing Sudan's demand for the sanctions to be
lifted," and expressed the hope that the Security Council would
examine it "at the soonest possible occasion."

He also welcomed Sudan's "positive and constructive" efforts to
improve its relations with its African and Arab neighbours.

Several Arab and non-aligned countries asked the Security
Council Monday to lift the sanctions imposed in April 1996. French
UN ambassador Jean-David Levitte joined his colleagues heading those
groups to ask the council to meet to discuss the issue as soon as
possible.

Sudanese UN ambassador Elfatih Erwa pointed out in a letter to
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, made public on Monday that Khartoum
last month signed six international conventions against terrorism.

Sudan's President Omar al-Beshir has in the last six months
introduced a series of political changes to oust veteran Islamist
ideologue Hassan al-Turabi, and worked to improve both his country's
international image and its relations with its neighbours, including
Egypt.

Sudan has always denied that it was sheltering the men being
sought by Ethiopia for the attempt against Mubarak while he was
visiting Addis Ababa.
