"Silly Putty" economy A recent reading dubbed the current economic phase the "silly putty" economy because the cycles have been stretched out and the highs and lows have been compressed. (The article was written before the big runup last year.) The authors attributed the cause to recent changes in demographics, mainly the movement of the baby boomers from their prime spending years to their prime investment & saving years. Add the demographics trend to the productivity increasing/inflation reducing growth in IT and reduced credit demand from Uncle Sam (lower budget deficits) and you have the recipe for the current low inflation/strong sustainable growth environment.
