Talisman faces critics - Work in Sudan defended
Calgary Sun, June 6
By CAMERON MAXWELL

Calgary-based Talisman Energy was once again front and centre yesterday over its business dealings in Sudan.

Company officials met publicly with a panel of experts and Sudanese officials at a public symposium titled Corporate Responsibility and the Peace Process in Sudan.

For those involved, the symposium meant a few steps forward, but didn't do much to change the mindset of the Sudanese.

"I don't like (Talisman) because they don't care about the lives (lost)," said Sabrino Magok, a member of the Sudanese community in Calgary.

For Talisman, the meeting meant some progress as the company defends itself against allegations its involvement in Sudan is helping the northern, Islamic government wage a bloody civil war against Christian and animist peoples in the south.

David Mann, Talisman's manager of investment relations, said economic development in Sudan will provide the best chance for peace.
