Applied Micro Expects a Slowdown in Growth of Sales to Nortel

New York, June 6 (Bloomberg) -- Applied Micro Circuits Corp., a maker of chips for telecommunication equipment, expects slower growth in sales to Nortel Networks Corp., its biggest customer, in the fiscal first quarter.

William Bendush, Applied Micro's chief financial officer, said the percentage of sales coming from Nortel will decrease. Officials at Nortel, North America's No. 2 phone-equipment maker, weren't immediately available to comment. Bendush made his comments at a PaineWebber Inc. conference in New York.

Applied Micro said in April that profit in the fourth quarter ended March 31 rose sixfold, helped by demand for fiber-optic equipment made by Nortel. Applied Micro shares fell 15 13/16, or 13 percent, to 106 13/16 on the Nasdaq National Market.

San Diego-based Applied Micro supplies Nortel with semiconductors that convert electronic data into pulses of light for transmission on strands of hair-thin glass known as optical fiber.

Applied Micro shares have risen more than sevenfold from a year ago and 68 percent this year. Nortel shares fell 3/4 to 58 7/8 on the New York Stock Exchange.
