Scumbria,

There are 2 significant news in the article (positive for AMD):

1. Willamette is scheduled to appear towards the end of this year, at clock speeds rising to 1.4GHz but conversations with a number of motherboard vendors has revealed they have no plans to support it.

End of the year is means no Q3, probably not even October. It means it will be MIA during 4th quarter Christmas season.

2. Instead, they will wait for the next generation, codenamed Tulloch, which Intel has told them will arrive in the second quarter of next year.

This means that Willy will be another Merced: proof of concept, not ready for prime time. The decreasing intro speed from 1.4 to 1.3 to 1.2 according to the Prudential report means Intel is having problems with clock speeds. No mention of 1.5 GHz anymore.

If Willy is in fact just a proof of concept, let's count how many quarters will we have without significant challenge:
Q2 00
Q3 00
Q4 00
Q1 01

We have a full year to print money, gain market share, build capacity, prepare Sledgehammer to hammer the Tulloch.

Joe

PS: It's only Tuesday, and we have Timna gone, Willy doubtful. Boxed Xeon withdrawn. What will the rest of the week bring? Is Merced safe in this week of doom.

PPS: Niles raised the target for INTC to $200

PPPS: Prudential re-iterated STRONG BUY recommendation for INTC
