morning Edwarda~
I have found the art discussion very interesting [I've been following the thread]
a thought on art and commercialism
is a perfect world, artists could create what moves them, inspires them, follow their visions, their private concepts
some have and succeeded, few
and although the age old concept of the 'starving artist' or 'suffering' for your art maybe be picturesque, practicality steps in and quite simply, they need money to subsist
so they alter 'their' vision in some of their works for general acceptance and a little cash
and they market, which takes time, effort
hopefully this pays the rent and they can continue to create what drives them and hope their body of work will make it, will be noticed, accepted
or just finding the peace in expressing that inner need, self satisfaction
and in doing that, hopefully, they don't lose their 'spark', their growth, as Warhol and Kinkade did [imo]
easy to sell out and sell your soul
it's a delicate line to walk
Henry Miller covered the subject well in much of his writing
also F. Scott Fitzgerald felt he was selling out by doing short stories for periodicals to pay the bills while he worked his novels. although his short stories are extremely good and considered very excellent work, he felt he was compromising himself
the torment of art and artists
