Dom,

I started accumulating about a year ago. Back then, I talked with a expert in ATM. He mentioned that the FORE ATM switches were 2 years ahead of the competition. You may want to take a look at their web site fore.com . They have won a number of technical awards for their products. It was also interesting to consider why Cisco bought Stratacom. If I remember correctly, they were caught off-guard by ATMs maturity. I think they did not expect ATM for another 2 years.

Several concerns included standards and interoperability. It appears that FORE may have been the powerhouse behind dealing with these issues. FORE's vision is ATM. I think the passion they seem to exhibit have allowed them to make such a big impact on the networking community. Other networking companies have taken the "Keep our options open" attitute to mitigate risk. When you don't have your back to the wall you may not have the drive. If you look at the number of vendors bringing ATM products to the table (see ATM Year 97 web site) you begin to see that it is not likely that ATM will go away. It will only get bigger. FORE's web page says that they test for interoperability between their products and lots of others (including competitors).

Their strategy for buying companies suggests that they want to cover the whole range (both products and services).

If you take a look that SI profile, you will see that they continue to grow (and I think have room to expand).

To conclude, I bought in because I felt that FORE as a company could grow 10 times in the next 4 or 5 years and that management team had the ability to deal with any problems which may arise. Please note that this is not a short term strategy. Investing (as opposed to trading) is a very personal business; you investigate all the information you can and take your best guess. I hope that some of the above comments sheds some light.

PE ratios seem to make no sense when dealing with this company. I purchased stock when its PE was 300 (when the price was 42). I have also purchased October 15 call options when the PE was 21 (when the price was recently at 11.5). Both numbers were as seen on stockmaster.com

Happy investing (or trading).

Matthew
