BGR, like i said, Ascani's study, which is the most extensive study that exists on this subject, shows that gold has been performing quite well during times of outright deflation, without fail since the 16th century. i assume that the shunning of paper assets during these periods has something to do with that.
for investment purposes i'm actually not too concerned about the reason. it is enough for me to know that a reliable historical record to this effect exists.
btw, Japan's deflationary depression may not be a very good example, as effectively deflation is very mild there. a country with raging deflation would be a better object of study.
we may soon get an opportunity to study the subject first hand...<eg>
