Jordan Telecommunications Company Acquires Additional Broadband Capacity From FLAG Telecom to Satisfy Increasing Internet Demand
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 2000--FLAG Telecom (Nasdaq: FTHL; LSE: FTL), a leading independent global carriers' carrier, today announced that Jordan Telecommunications Company (JTC) is acquiring additional DS3 level (45 Mbit/s) broadband capacity between Aqaba and New York, enabling the company to meet the expected rise in Internet demand in Jordan. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

FLAG Telecom is building a global network infrastructure and aims to achieve a network of over 100,000 km by 2003. The company provides an innovative range of carrier services and network services to the international carrier community, ASPs and ISPs.

Pierre Mattei, CEO, JTC, said: ``Jordan is experiencing an increasing demand for broadband access to the rest of the world from our ISPs. As part of our strategy to meet this demand we partnered with FLAG Telecom to bring their global network to land at Aqaba and provide fast, clear communications. Today we are announcing the acquisition of capacity direct from Jordan to the heart of New York dedicated to Internet traffic. With easy access direct to the hub of the world's Internet traffic we are aiming to reduce the price of Internet access for all our domestic customers, which in turn will further expand e-commerce and other Internet applications in Jordan.''

Walid Irshaid, FLAG Telecom's Vice President, Middle East and Africa, said: ``Increasingly our customers are looking for direct city to city connectivity, and we are able to provide services to most of the world's major business centres. Under the Patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah III, Jordan became the 16th landing on the FLAG Europe Asia cable route in July last year. Since the opening of the landing station at Aqaba, the region has seen an ever increasing need for high-capacity, error-free transmission as data takes over from voice as the most usual means of communication.''

FLAG Telecom is a leading independent global carriers' carrier providing an innovative range of products and services to the international carrier community, Application Service Providers (ASPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) across a global network platform optimized to support the next generation of IP over optical data networks. The FLAG Europe-Asia cable stretches from the UK to Japan and entered commercial service in November 1997. FLAG Atlantic-1, the world's first dual transoceanic terabit cable system, is currently under construction and is scheduled to enter service in Q1 2001. The recently announced FLAG Pacific-1, is expected to be the longest transoceanic DWDM system to date and is expected to enter service in early 2002.

Telecommunications is one of the fastest growing industries and FLAG Telecom is well positioned to be a world leader in the most critical segment of this market. By 2002, FLAG Telecom's unique operational network footprint is expected to stretch over 64,500 route km from New York City across the Atlantic Ocean to Paris, London and all major European business centres; through the Mediterranean to the Middle East, Africa and on to Asia. From Tokyo it is expected to run across the Pacific to Internet hub cities of Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. For further information, visit www.flagtelecom.com.
