KB, gpowell, and Thread,

The following HFC tutorial (which is presented in plain English) from IEC should help to answer many of your (KB's and others') questions.

webproforum.com

And in particular, the following page from the same tutorial has a chart which lays out the intentions behind each region of spectrum.

webproforum.com

There is also an HFC/DWDM tutorial at this site for those who are interested:

It would be good to keep in mind that while most of the tutorials at IEC are very good, they are all contributions from various vendors, as you are able to note immediately when you bring up the index. As such, it's good to keep in mind that often you will come across a particular vendor's own adaptation where the standards allow for vendor discretionary implementations. And sometimes, when they don't permit. FWIW.

gp,

NB: the extreme upper region of spectrum between 750MHz and 1 GHz does states that this region is intended for future two way. But it's vague, now knowing what we know, as to whether both directions will apply to this part, or whether the upstream return will also go via 5 to 40MHz. I show you this because I knew that BOTH of us couldn't have lost it, altogether, and thought you'd like to see the root of, at least my, previous misconception. _g_
