<And actually, aspirin was prescribed before the FDA was established. But your larger point, which is that aspirin's mechanism was not understood, but aspirin was prescribed anyway, for decades, is true>

I was just in a venture round with a Dr. from Hopkins who has a novel and chemical process patented by where the exact mechanistic action is found in a test tube by seeing what compounds 'stick' to which proteins, etc. His said his dream is to find the exact mechanism of aspirin... which doesn't make financial sense at the moment as there would be little to gain. I think that aspirin must have different/additional methods of action on top of just COX inhibitor... I didn't question him on this as it is out of my realm. Just FYI
