Nokia Networks Selects Netro Technology to Complement Its Broadband Wireless Solutions
ATLANTA,-June 6, 2000--Nokia Networks, the infrastructure arm of Finland-based Nokia Corp. and a global leader in mobile, fixed and IP networks, and Netro Corp.(Nasdaq:NTRO, a market leader in broadband wireless access equipment, today announced an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement at the annual SuperComm 2000 conference being held in Atlanta, June 8-10.
Under the agreement, Nokia will market and distribute Netro's AirStar(TM) technology to telecommunications providers around the world as part of the Nokia CityHopper(TM) broadband wireless access system. The agreement complements Nokia's wireless broadband solutions within the broadband wireless access market.
``Netro is very pleased to be working with such a strong global leader in the broadband wireless access market addressing the IP and voice application market,'' said Gideon Ben-Efraim, president and chief executive officer of Netro.
``The relationship with Nokia represents a significant expansion of our global expansion strategy into this explosive market, which is estimated to reach U.S.$16.3 billion worldwide by 2004.''
The Netro AirStar system provides Nokia with broadband wireless access solutions into the 10, 26, 28 (LMDS) and 39 GHz range. These bands are the four most commonly licensed broadband wireless access frequency bands around the world.
Using AirStar's wireless broadband access system, which is based on Netro's patented CellMac(TM) technology, Nokia's customers will be able to provide competitively priced packet on-demand services that can enhance both e-commerce, IP and voice service for the underserved small and medium-sized business market.
Recent studies by several industry analysts are predicting rapid and significant growth in the broadband wireless access market.
Last month, The Strategis Group of Washington D.C. predicted that the global market for broadband wireless access solutions would grow to $16.3 billion in 2004.
