Sally Mann grew up in Lexington at the same time I did, though she was younger and so we didn't run in the same crowd. She and her husband came back there to live and raise their family. Her work is quite unusual and I think extraordinary. I remember sitting with her one day at a party (she had a new baby at her breast), and talking about pregnancy and motherhood; she's very lovely and extremely intelligent. Her work has been very controversial through the years so I looked to see if there was any of it online. Here's an article written about her explanation of her work and her surprise at the reaction.
